Heli-lifting places a sling load where lifting equipment can neither reach nor be set up. Tarn has a feature few departments share: here, it is not always access that is the obstacle—it is the weight. Helicat Pyrénées works on these sites for professionals and local authorities.

Heli-lifting in Tarn: the department where the load matters more than access

Sidobre, a massif of boulders

East of Castres, Sidobre forms a granite plateau dotted with “chaos” fields—piles of rounded boulders shaped by erosion. It is both a natural site and an active quarrying area.

In this area, what needs moving is rarely light. Granite is dense: a modest volume quickly reaches several hundred kilos, and an ordinary-looking piece exceeds a tonne.

The terrain itself makes it difficult to set up lifting equipment. Tracks cross boulder fields and woodland, the ground is uneven, and there is often no level base exactly where the lift is needed.

The Montagne Noire and the Ségala

To the south, the Montagne Noire closes off the department with its forested slopes and equipped ridgelines. Pylons, relay stations, forestry and hiking structures are served by narrow tracks that stop well short of the worksite.

To the north and west, the Ségala is a plateau cut by wooded valleys, with scattered housing and farm buildings at the end of private roads. The Tarn and the Agout carve valleys with sometimes steep banks.

2

Albi, a listed centre where nothing can be set up

The Episcopal City of Albi, with Sainte-Cécile Cathedral and the Berbie Palace, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around it lies a dense old town of Toulouse brick, with narrow streets.

This status does not prevent worksites; it regulates them. Operations and overflight are subject to rules specific to the listed property and its surroundings, covering the flight path and altitude. It is part of the file, handled upstream.

On this type of site, the helicopter offers an often decisive advantage: it requires no ground footprint—no platform and no temporary access road.

What weight changes in practical terms

The AS350 Écureuil covers most worksites, from 0 to 1,200 kg. Beyond that, and up to 4,500 kg, your load is carried by the H225.

With a granite piece, this threshold comes sooner than one might think. If you do not know the exact mass, provide the dimensions and the type of stone; the estimate is made from that. This calculation determines the aircraft and the number of lifts, and it is done upstream.

Capacity rather than proximity

Our bases are in the Pyrenees, at Perpignan–Rivesaltes, La Llagonne and Marignac / the Luchon valley. Tarn is not on our doorstep, and we prefer to say so.

What we bring here is capacity: an aircraft sized for the actual load, full preparation of the authorisation file, an experienced ground team for slinging heavy pieces, and a single point of contact from the first discussion to the final lift. Depending on the type of worksite, we mobilise the best-positioned partner.

The file is prepared for you: DGAC and prefecture procedures, informing local residents, coordination with the operator, the site manager or the municipality. The time slot is confirmed the day before based on the forecast, with postponement at no cost if conditions do not allow safe flying.

Our flights are operated under specialised operations certificate FR.DEC.0204, which covers aerial work.

Frequently asked questions about heli-lifting in Tarn

Can a granite block be moved by helicopter?

It depends on its mass, not its nature. Granite is dense, so a modest volume quickly reaches several hundred kilos. Beyond 1,200 kg, the load is carried by the H225, which can take up to 4,500 kg. The exact dimensions and the type of stone make it possible to estimate the mass upstream.

Do you work on an active quarry?

The operation is scheduled with the operator, who sets the time window, the safety perimeter and the conditions for teams being present. The constraint here is organisational rather than technical.

Can the Episcopal City of Albi be overflown?

Overflight of a listed property and its surroundings is subject to specific rules covering the flight path and altitude. They are checked case by case depending on the drop-off point and the approach path, upstream.

How do you drop off on a ridge in the Montagne Noire?

A sufficient opening in the forest canopy is required for lowering the load, as well as a clear fallback point. The loading area is positioned as close as possible below. On-site reconnaissance settles these points.

What information is required to obtain a quote?

The weight and dimensions of each load, or failing that its dimensions and material, the number of pieces, the municipality and the precise location of the drop-off point, a loading area if you have identified one, and the deadline. You will receive our response within 48 hours.
